New American research shows that there could be a link between the controversial MMR triple vaccine and autism and bowel disease in children.
The study appears to confirm the findings of British doctor Andrew Wakefield, who caused a storm in 1998 by suggesting a possible link.
Now a team from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina are examining 275 children with regressive autism and bowel disease – and of the 82 tested so far, 70 prove positive for the measles virus.
Last night the team’s leader, Dr Stephen Walker, said: ‘Of the handful of results we have in so far, all are vaccine strain and none are wild measles.
‘This research proves that in the gastrointestinal tract of a number of children who have been diagnosed with regressive autism, there is evidence of measles virus.
‘What it means is that the study done earlier by Dr Wakefield and published in 1998 is correct. That study didn’t draw any conclusions about specifically what it means to find measles virus in the gut, but the implication is it may be coming from the MMR vaccine. If that’s the case, and this live virus is residing in the gastrointestinal tract of some children, and then they have GI inflammation and other problems, it may be related to the MMR.’
The 1998 study by Dr Wakefield, then a reader in gastroenterology at the Royal Free Hospital in North London, and 12 other doctors claimed to have found a new bowel disease, autism enterocolitis.
At the time, Dr Wakefield said that although they had not proved a link between MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and autism, there was cause for concern and the Government should offer the option single vaccines – instead of only MMRs – until more research had been done.
The paper – and the confused interpretation of its findings – caused uproar and led to many parents withdrawing their co-operation for the triple jab. Ten of the paper’s authors also signed retractions on the interpretation but stood by the science.
This is the second independent study to back up Dr Wakefield. In 2001 John O’Leary, Professor of Pathology at St James’s Hospital and Trinity College, Dublin, replicated his findings.
Last night Dr Wakefield said: ‘This new study confirms what we found in British children and again with Professor O’Leary. The only exposure these children have had to measles is through the MMR vaccine.
‘They were developing normally until they regressed. They now suffer autism and bowel disease.
‘The Department of Health and some of the media wanted to dismiss our research as insignificant. The excuse was that no one else had the same findings as us. What they didn’t say is that no one else had looked.’
A spokesman for the Department of Health said they had not read the American report, but added: ‘MMR remains the best form of protection against measles, mumps and rubella.’

The Daily Mail article was published in 2006, and (I believe) Walker never was able to publish the paper. In other words, his research wasn’t good enough to make the cut.
Wakefield’s still been struck off from the UK medical register.
Vaccines still aren’t causally connected with autism.
Autism still isn’t causally connected with anything to do with measles.

Vaccines are not safe, and the number of shots children are taking keeps increasing at a tremendous speed. This means huge profits for the big drug companies — especially when parents are told that it is mandatory.
This story was ridiculous when it was published four years ago. Since then, Wakefield has lost his license to practise medicine, has seen his research retracted, lost his job, been fired from the editorial board of a quack journal, been dumped by Defeat Autism Now and had his name airbrushed from anything he’s been involved in.
Boy are you dumb.

Have you not heard of the tactics that are used against anyone that dare speaks the truth. (Especially against Big Pharma with all their obcene profits to be protected). When you can’t counter the claim with truths it’s easier to attack and discredit the messenger.
Professor Carol Quigley said after his book Tragedy and Hope: A History of the World in Our Time was published that “they poured shit over me and then told me I stank”.
Maybe you should stop believing everything you are told and start doing some thinking of your own.
Have you not heard of scientific misconduct? Falsifying statistics? Conflicts of interest?
This isn’t some conspiracy to discredit Wakefield — the facts are all there in the ‘research’ he did, and his dodgy dealings with solicitors looking for evidence to use in an anti-vax case.
Repeated trials to try and replicate Wakefield’s findings have failed to reproduce the results (except, extraordinarily enough, trials that Wakefield has been involved in).
Wake up Lorraine — the guy was a charlatan.
If you think that there’s no chance whatsoever that the government and Big Pharma don’t have your best interests and health as a priority then you are a daft sheep.

Wakefield was not stripped because of the FINDINGS of his study, but because of some questionable means of gathering data (ie – paying the kids for their blood samples). He didn’t even draw a conclusion that MMR->Autism, just stated that further research is needed…and this, I wholeheartedly agree with, although it will never happen because the fat tycoons at big Pharma and all the other fat cats might lose a couple million should there ever even be an iota of evidence against their precious ‘quick-fix’ pills and “Immunizations

Of course he didn’t. He was quite happy to let other people draw that conclusion for him. Given he was being paid by solicitors to find such a link, there is little doubt he worked in such a way to allow anyone who wanted to draw that conclusion to do so.

Peter P can you show us any proof of what you are saying, or are you just repeating what like a parrot what others had accused… dr Wakefield is one who lost everything and for what trying to help …
