A US Army veteran who killed himself last month penned a poignant suicide letter in which he agonized over ‘war crimes’ he was a part of in Iraq, as well as what he calls his ‘abandonment’ by the government that forced him to commit them.
Daniel Somers, 30, was a veteran of more than 400 combat missions during the Iraq war, when he was a Humvee machine gunner in a tactical human intelligence team (THT) in Baghdad. He interrogated countless Iraqis, including resistance fighters and suspected terrorists, and was later a senior intelligence analyst with Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in Mosul.
