ON THE BRINK RADIO #249 HAWAI’IAN VOLCANOS UPDATE: REPORT FROM ‘DOWN UNDER’ & PELE ON FIRE :)

“An unbelievable amount of lava is erupting from fissures below Leilani Estates on the Big Island of Hawaii! More than twenty cracks are issuing red hot liquid rock, which is coursing downhill, destroying homes, cars, roads… and anything else in her path. The fissures have now joined forming a “curtain of fire” in a spectacular display. Numerous fingers of lava have stretched toward the sea overnight, and this morning were only about a mile from the water. Over forty homes have been destroyed since the eruption began fifteen days ago. Although it began in Leilani and burned several homes there, she soon established her vents below the subdivision with towering fountains, spatter cones feeding gigantic lava flows. So far, no deaths have been reported. First responders have evacuated several residents who had become trapped by the fast moving flows. Pohoiki Road has been covered with lava, but Highways 132 and 137 are still open as of this writing. If she continues at the same rate we saw this morning, she may cross the ‘Red Road,’ and make the ocean by tonight or tomorrow.”

GREETINGS FROM THE LUCKY COUNTRY, THE LAND DOWN UNDER…

“Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover

I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover, yeah…”

I got back to my beloved Land of Aus last Tuesday night after an amazing and powerful 3.5 months on the Big Island of Hawai’iki. This post is not about being back in Australia, nor is it about the awesomeness of my Hawai’ian visit, its challenges and its rewards, the many wonderful people I met and who made me possible, being in ‘America’ in some ways but not in others, or the beauty and power of Mothers Ocean and Earth there in general, but specifically about the latter in her manifestation as active volcanos: the birth canals of new land.

For me it all seemed to start with our visit to the summit of Mauna Kea on 25 April. My great new friend Kenny Huntington and my landlord at the time Bob ‘Dobbs’ Bogle and I trekked to the highest point in the Hawai’ian archipelago, a very sacred volcano of 4207 m (13,800 feet) who last erupted 6,000 to 4,000 years ago. It is considered to be the tallest mountain on the Earth, well over 33,000 feet high counting from the ocean floor.

I was playing my native American frame drum ‘Io-Paikea Sun-thunder Kaka-Tatanka Good-medicine Wave Dancer’ in the minutes leading up to sunset. As Taiowa neared the horizon, I increased the intensity of my drumming, playing harder and harder for the last minute or so, then hit her quite hard for a few beats just as the sun disappeared. I wasn’t playing any harder than I’d played her countless times before, but on one of the last hits the head of the drum split, opening a crack about 10 cm long. I was stunned and momentarily heart-broken, but I also felt an overwhelming sense of disturbance, not necessarily of something ‘wrong’ or bad but something HUGE and OMINOUS. It wasn’t a feeling that I had ‘done’ anything other than break my drum, but it definitely seemed like an omen or portent of some kind…a shamanic occurrence or synchronicity. Scientifically, I realized that the quite chilly temperature and very low humidity might have combined to make the golden buffalo skin drum head more brittle than it would normally be; spiritually I felt as if the spirit of the mountain had blessed or ‘initiated’ my drum…and me…and that the ‘wound’ in the drum head could and would be healed but that the opening allowed the energy or ‘mana’ of the volcano into my drum as a form of empowerment.

Five days later on the first of May the action started: first the floor of the Pu’u O’o vent collapsed, followed by the collapse of the floor of Haleamaumau, which is the vent and former lava lake down inside the much larger Kilauea caldera which is the focal point of Hawaiian Volcanos National Park. Both of these were huge reservoirs over a thousand feet deep whose magma subsequently disappeared underground.

Then on the 4th of May a huge 6.9 quake rocked the whole island, and shortly thereafter fissures began to open in the East Rift Zone in the lower Puna region of the Big Island. Since then over 20 fissures have opened, spewing massive volumes of magma as well as smoke and sulfur dioxide fumes.

A few days ago a large explosion occurred in the Haleamaumau crater which lofted rocks 2/3 of a meter in diameter thousands of feet into the air and generated a huge plume of smoke and ash reaching over 9 kilometers into the air.

BUSINESS AS USUAL:)

A few days before I left I sewed up the crack in my drum and sealed it well with Aqua-seal (a brilliant adhesive made for fixing wet-suits that retains its flexibility after curing…recommended!) and asked Madam Pele if she could seal up the cracks a bit on her end of things 🙂 Tuesday of two weeks ago Kenny and I journeyed back to the summit of Mauna Kea where I played my repaired drum to honour the mountain and volcanos and Pele and her family and all of Mother Earth and her family of life. I played much more gently this time. And she is now called ‘Io-Paikea Sun-thunder Kaka-Tatanka Good-medicine Pele Wave Dancer.’

Yesterday Mick Kalber (the brilliant aerial videographer) reported on the huge volume of lava heading towards the ocean. He estimates that it might enter the ocean tonight or tomorrow…I am hoping that it will happen by the light of day so they can get some awesome footage of the moment of contact…

It’s been extraordinarily exciting for me to have been there for all this…when I first came to the Big Island in January I asked Pele if she would please put on a little show for me. Voila…I reckon for her, this IS a ‘little show’. I have also wondered if the 6.9 quake was her ‘answer’ to the call of my drum that day?

I have to say, however, that being there was very much NOT like looking at all this from another continent like I’m doing now. Au contraire, I was close to ground zero the whole time. The big quake was the onset of ‘reality’-level awareness…not so much for me, as I’m someone who is accustomed to being ‘on the brink’ all the time…but even more for everyone there: you can’t help but wonder when the next one might be coming and how big it might be.

Where I was staying was not in the direct line of fire of the existing fissure system, and was closest to a lava flow from 1840; but theoretically the ground can open and lava can come out anywhere at any time. And the most immediate threat to health is not the lava but the fumes, the sulfur dioxide and other poisonous gases that come out.

What really ‘freaked me out’ the most…not really but it did put me on red alert level…was when I was awakened at around 3 a.m. last Wednesday morning by the smell of the volcanic gases. I had never in my life smelled this smell and it sent a shock-wave through my entire system. I got up and went outside and looked up to see the stars gradually being obliterated by smoke. I went ‘OMG it’s coming closer…’ As it turned out, this was just a result of a shift in wind direction, but 12 miles is not far especially when Mick is saying that the lava is moving a mile per day, which is incredibly fast for Hawai’ian lava flows.

No words can describe this smell but it’s a very heavy smell and not really like anything else…it’s not like a bush-fire or something burning. But this odour seemed to penetrate deeply into the recesses of my collective unconscious memory and made me realize that this smell meant and MEANS that extreme danger is very close. I wondered what my distant ancestors might have thought or been inspired to do when experiencing all this…to appease Pele, to ask her to cease and desist…

PELE, AKUA OF LAVA AND VOLCANOS
All in all, I spent most of my time on the Big Island communing with Laka and her other sister the goddess of the sea and waters; I thought of and honoured Pele every day but only visited her sacred sites a small number of times. And I left gifts to them all of lovely painted rocks…Pele now has two; Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa each have one; Laka has two, one each for my favourite plumaria/frangipani tree and my favourite casuarina tree; and the sea goddess has one that also honours Io, the sacred hawk, who visited and sang for me several times at my favourite tide pool.

It’s been interesting to hear from various people about all this. My impression is that all this has been covered heavily on national and international-level mainstream news, but a friend in Arizona said he had seen next to nothing on mainstream news. I haven’t been trying to cover this aspect, but I can say that last week I read an article which quoted a bloke who was like the director of Hawai’ian Tourism, some kind of high-level bureaucrat. He was complaining that since the big stuff started happening, over $5 million worth of ‘tourism income’ had been lost due to people canceling their plane flights and accomodation and tour bookings not only on the Big Island but for Hawai’i as a whole, well into July. I don’t blame people for not coming to a place where you might have to wear a gas mask in order to breathe, but this is not adversely affecting any of the other islands. I can see the financial interests behind Tourism Hawai’i doing their best to keep the real information out of mainstream media, in the same way that you will NEVER see any mention of ‘vog’ in any tourism information about Hawai’i. Volcanic smog is a constant on the Big Island; it mainly affects the Kona side but is not severe enough to do more than make the sky hazy and occasionally burn the eyes. This does not exist until you are already there.

Another dimension to all this is the possibility that geo-physical warfare has been involved in this spate of vulcanism. Certainly the technology to conduct ‘tectonic warfare’ exists and has been deployed numerous times in the past two decades. And the will to use it certainly exists, as well: if the powers that be detonated atomic weapons over major population centres over 70 years ago, why would they hesitate to wreak environmental havoc that cannot easily be traced back to anyone if it could benefit them and further their agendas, whatever and however nefarious they might be?

After all, Terry Lilley told us that he is certain that microwave-based geo-physical warfare technologies were used to stall the storm over Kauai that dumped the record rainfall which destroyed a lot of the island.

IF geo-physical warfare has been involved in the on-going Big Island vulcanism episode, it’s purposes could include 1) to ‘soften up the enemy’ = ‘the people’ who are living there, clearly as obstacles to further military expansion in the same way that whales and dolphins are ‘biological interference’ to undersea warfare 2) to help to get rid of most of the human population on the Big Island so that military-industrial interests can do ye olde ‘land grabs’ and turn the place into another base/waste dump 3) to function as part of a larger-scale tectonic/volcanic warfare scenario involving splitting off the Hilina Slump to create a massive tsunami and/or triggering greater vulcanism in the entire Pacific Rim ‘ring of fire’ region, and 4) to help to ‘MAKE HAWAI’I SAFE FOR RIMPAC’ = the world’s biggest naval war-‘game’ coming up in Hawai’ian waters June-July.

“Is Geothermal Fracking good for Hawaii? While many connected to the geothermal industry believe it is, and many others distance geothermal from fracking all together, there is growing evidence that both the drilling and the injection of cold water into hot rocks used in geothermal energy plants does fracture the rocks, which can induce earthquakes and through contamination of the atmosphere and water tables can affect our health and safety.”

After all, the geo-thermal plant there…which was curiously avoided by Pele’s lava flow…is apparently owned by an Israeli company with ties to the Rothschild banking cartel. If anyone is involved in the deployment of geo-physical warfare to further economic, geo-political and anti-humanitarian agendas, it would be these folks. This plant has been there for quite a few years and has numerous de facto ‘fracking wells’ going down a mile and a half.

In the same way that Anadarko Petroleum was instrumental in engineering the Christchurch quake of February 2011, being a branch of the military disguised as a resource extraction company, PGV may be or have been a military installation designed to assist in the conduct of volcanic warfare.
