NZ Customs Trials Controversial Scanners

Security scanners which have sparked an outcry in the United States are being trialled at Auckland Airport.

The scanners will be offered as an alternative to a physical personal search and is designed to enhance Customs’ ability to detect smugglers at the border.

The scanner uses passive millimetre-wave technology to detect concealed objects – even when they are hidden beneath clothing.

The trial will assess whether passengers are more willing to opt for a less invasive alternative to a physical personal search.
