Shea Wilcox, from Australia, part of a Greenpeace expedition onboard the Arctic Sunrise, documenting an ongoing seismic blasting operation. On behalf of global oil companies including BP, Chevron and Royal Dutch Shell, Norwegian TGS Nopec recently began firing airguns that emit 259 decibel blasts towards the seabed in order to find possible oil reservoirs in the Greenland Sea. A new independent scientific report commissioned by Greenpeace is exposing the damages that seismic blasting can cause to marine life in the Arctic. Among the many potential negative impacts identified in the study are hearing loss, ice entrapment, avoidance and disruption of migratory routes, stranding, communication disruptions, increased levels of stress and disruption of the food chain.
