ON THE BRINK RADIO #236 IN 9 HRS: DEEP SEABED MINING…SPECTRE OF GEO-TERRORISM AND ECOCIDAL CATASTROPHE

Solwara 1 is the world’s first seabed mine to get a license to operate. It will set a worldwide precedent if the project does go ahead.

There are strong indications that microbial life is widespread at depth in the crust of the Earth, just as such life has been identified in numerous ocean vents. This life is not dependent on solar energy and photosynthesis for its primary energy supply, and it is essentially independent of the surface circumstances. Its energy supply comes from chemical sources, due to fluids that migrate upward from deeper levels in the Earth. Subsurface life may be widespread among the planetary bodies of our solar system, since many of them have equally suitable conditions below, while having totally inhospitable surfaces. One may even speculate that such life may be widely disseminated in the universe, since planetary type bodies with similar subsurface conditions may be common as solitary objects in space, as well as in other solar-type systems.” THOMAS GOLD. 1992

Welcome back to the brink after a brief respite from focusing on the dangers that human military-industrial civilization is creating for life on Mother Earth. Today’s show is a rebroadcast of an important broadcast from two years ago, an interview with my great mate Barry Lalley in Papua New Guinea. His Bismarck Ramu Group has been educating the indigenous people of PNG for many years about the impending disaster of deep seabed mining, the very first experimental project of which is scheduled to begin soon just off the coast of New Britain.

As horrific as the existing global mining industry is, our primary violation of the Hopi prophecy warning, “If we dig precious things from the land we will invite disaster”…try to imagine the ecological and socio-political catastrophes resulting from our chronic mining of coal, gold, hydro-carbons, uranium, to name but a few…

Try now to imagine a brand new form of mining that will endanger millions of times greater surface area than existing mining…and millions of times more life-forms, the vast majority of which are as yet unknown and undiscovered. This is the spectre of deep seabed mining.seabed mining

Using robotic technologies patented by Lockheed Martin in the 1970’s, this new paradigm of geo-terrorism is spearheaded by a renegade Canadian firm called Nautilus. Once they can establish that this can actually be done…and I don’t want to sound cynical, but regardless of the many set-backs they are experiencing on many fronts, it’s only a matter of time until the technology advances far enough to make it possible, at which point all the MAJOR PLAYERS in the global mining arena will step in and the surface of Mother Earth’s oceans will be under full spectrum attack, along with everyone who lives in the ocean.

These interviews with Dr. Helen Rosembaum, director of the Deep Seabed Mining Campaign are very informative:

“PLEASE EXPLAIN TO US WHAT THE SOLAWA 1 PROJECT IS ABOUT?
Solwara 1 is the world’s first seabed mine to get a license to operate. It will set a worldwide precedent if the project does go head. It is situated in the Bismarck Sea in Papua, New Guinea — a small sea surrounded by islands such as East New Britain, New Ireland Province and another small group of islands called Duke of York Islands — all part of the Bismarck Archipelago. It’s a project of a Canadian mining company called Nautilus Minerals and they, in conjunction with their major shareholders who also include the Papua-New-Guinea government (a 15% share in the project) have their sights set on developing a new model of mining.

SO DEEP SEA MINING HASN’T BEEN DONE ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD YET? CAN WE TALK ABOUT “EXPERIMENTATION”?
Originally the company denied that this was a big experiment. Our colleagues in Papua New Guinea have been saying for many years that they refuse to be “guinea pigs” for experimental seabed mining. Recently, Nautilus itself has been promoting the experimental nature of the project in their own media releases. What they are going to gain in terms of mineral wealth is really not the main point of this exercise. That’s the reason they haven’t done all the standard tests a mining company would normally do to check the ore body. The main point is actually to test the equipment and see what the impacts of mining hydrothermal vents will be.”

As astronomer Thomas Gold points out in his brilliant book The Deep Hot Biosphere, not only does microbial life exist at great depth in the Earth’s crust, but this life is not only ubiquitous there but also constitutes a far greater bio-mass than all surface and oceanic life-forms put together. This is a pretty staggering thing to think about.

While we, ‘man, the wise’ are collectively lolling around in la-la land telling each other how beautiful we are, subsets of OUR species are waging multi-dimensional war on life as we know her and Mother Earth herself. Ignorance is by no means bliss, not for long anyway; we are each responsible for what all members of our species is doing. This is the perspective of Mother Earth as I see it.

While we busy ourselves waging war in every possible way, who may truly be called the real passengers/crew of Mother Earth…the microbes and cyanobacteria…hardly notice and maintain their ancient ways of life undisrupted by human megalomania. Ultimately it is ourselves that we are destroying.
