As I write this, it’s Thursday the 12th. Quite a significant number, 12.
12 witches in a coven, 12 Apostles. For UFO enthusiasts, there’s MJ12 (Majic 12).
Here’s some more examples:
In fact once one gets into multiples of 12, such as 12×12 (144) it starts appearing encoded into legends and ancient texts everywhere, usually alluding allegorically to the movements of the stars and planets and measures of time.
I glance at the clock: In one hour it will be Friday. As I’ve been reminded continually throughout the day, it will also be “The 13th”. Amazing how enduring this superstitious dread of the number 13 is.
Why?
There was a movie a few years back, The 13th Warrior, based on a Michael Crichton story. 12 Viking warriors on a mission whose success relied on the addition of a 13th member who must be an “outsider”. In the New Testament, the “13th warrior” is of course Jesus. In a witches Coven, this 13th participant is supposedly the Devil! as for MJ12, the 13th member is said to be an ET named J-Rod.
Some argue that 13 is unlucky, others the opposite, and some think it’s meaningless superstition.
My interpretation is that the number 12 represents the status quo: Stability, normality, business as usual, whether in the daily routine of life or the clockwork of The Heavens.
The number 13 represents change: The upsetting of the Apple-cart; the rocking of the boat. The “13th warrior” is the odd number that acts as the catalyst for change, for worse or for better. Most people dislike change. A shift from the comfort zone. Uncertainty. Fear and anxiety. These days we hear the word “Resilience” bandied around a lot. Here in Christchurch it’s usually related to our ability to adapt to the aftermath of our recent spate of seismic upheavals.
Ultimately, nothing is more certain than that things will change. It’s how we respond to change that really matters.
