Downs – but not out, by Jo-Blogs

Right now, our government is amending our Abortion laws, I thought they were liberal enough but apparently not.

“I’m proposing it comes out of the Crimes Act,” Jacinda Adern explained to the disability community.

It sounds very high-minded and caring.  Actually Jacinda’s being disingenuous about abortion being in the Crimes act.   I’ll go even further and say dishonest.  The only thing mentioned in the Crimes Act about abortion is in terms of getting a backstreet abortion.  That’s the only part of it that’s a crime!  I’d really like her to explain that one to the NZ public.

Currently, there is a 20-week time limit for abortions in New Zealand law.

“We have time periods already set out in law, I’m not proposing changes to that,” Jacinda reassured the disability community.”

Really?

She must have changed her mind and forgot to tell the community.  The proposed legislation will see this time limit removed and abortion will be available up until birth, with the approval of a single registered health practitioner.

“In the jurisdictions that have a similar clause, this has in practice allowed for abortion for disabilities including Down syndrome right up to birth.”

There are many New Zealanders who are pro-life going by the March for Life in 2019, they’ve filled the streets but they’re not being listened to.

I don’t want to sit as judge and jury on any parent who has conceived a disabled child.  It’s their choice, it’s already up to them what they want to do.  My beef is the prime minister changing the laws while lying to the NZ public and the disability community.

When we were setting up our business, I worked as a caregiver for intellectually disabled people on the weekends.  They were the nicest group of people I’ve ever worked with – kind, childlike, very positive people.  There wasn’t any gossip or nastiness.  It was nice, a complete contrast to some of the toxic work places I’ve endured.

It is an obstacle having a disability, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world.  I’ve noticed that intellectually disabled people have a very high EQ – emotional intelligence. It’s as if nature wants to compensate.

It’s inspirational when the disabled and their family can succeed against all the odds.  Here’s a story from Syria:

Abortion law critics angered by handling of submissions

This is what can be aborted now – before NZ’s current 20 week limit:
Amazing Image of Unborn Baby at 18 Weeks is Called the Photograph of the Century
“The celebrated photograph was taken by Swedish photojournalist Lennart Nilsson and published in the April 1965 edition of Life under the title “Drama of Life Before Birth.” That issue became the “fastest-selling copy” of the magazine in the history of its publication, according to the report.

In full colour and crystal clear detail, the picture showed a foetus in its amniotic sac, with its umbilical cord winding off to the placenta. The unborn child, floating in a seemingly cosmic backdrop, appears vulnerable yet serene. Its eyes are closed and its tiny, perfectly formed fists are clutched to its chest,” the report described.”
