NZ: Call for $5 extra fee to “fly safer”

Cockpit doors on board flights within New Zealand will be strengthened to prevent passengers attacking pilots, but further security options could prove too expensive.

The Government yesterday released its long-awaited report into aviation security after an alleged hijacking of a flight from Blenheim to Christchurch last year.

Asha Ali Abdille, 34, a Blenheim vineyard worker, was accused of hijacking a passenger flight from Blenheim to Christchurch on February 8, 2008.

The report found the screening of carry-on baggage on domestic flights would be the best way to improve security, however it would come at a cost.

Baggage screening would cost up to $161 million over 10 years if implemented in the country’s 14 busiest airports, with costs being passed onto passengers through an additional security tax of about $5 per flight.
