PM meets with Japanese soldiers before signing pact
By Shane McLeod
Prime Minister John Howard has been meeting Japanese soldiers before signing a new defence pact with Japan.
Mr Howard has today held talks with Japan’s Ministers for Defence and Trade and has also been able to meet a group of Japanese soldiers who worked alongside Australian troops in Iraq.
“I made the observation that it was increasingly necessary for Australia and Japan to be engaged together in security issues in our region,” he said.
Mr Howard will soon meet Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at his office in Central Tokyo.
After talks, they will sign a historic security agreement.
Mr Howard has today stressed that the agreement is not directed at Japan’s influential neighbour China, but instead is a development in the already strong relationship between Australia and Japan.
