Technology and exams ‘creating robotic children’

An over exposure to technology risks creating a generation of “robotic” children, a leading headmistress warned.

A rise in the use of the internet and video games is damaging pupils’ social skills and undermining their ability to form independent thought, it was claimed.

Vicky Tuck, president of the Girls’ Schools Association, which represents 200 top fee-paying schools, said it had been fuelled by a rise in the number of examinations which created a culture of “teach, test and forget”.

Speaking at the association’s annual conference on Monday, she will call for all sixth-formers to complete a 5,000-word dissertation to stretch their imaginations.
