JAPANESE DISASTER WORSENS BY THE HOUR

NOTE FROM JEFF: Operation Ostrich is the U.S. governments response
to the extreme nuclear disaster unfolding at this time.

NOTE FROM JEFF: The situation appears to be getting worse hour by
hour, with Japanese officials admitting that two reactors are in
meltdown; a third violent explosion at another reactor has led
researchers to doubt that the reactor vessel is actually intact,
despite claims to the contrary. It looks like massive cover-ups are
in progress in the USA and Japan; Rosalind Peterson tells us that
the U.S. government was doing absolutely nothing to warn west coast
populations about an impending radiation hazard; yet a U.S. Navy
warship detected a cloud of radiation and moved further off shore.
As well, choppers 60 miles from the reactors have detected two
different radioactive substances that indicate total meltdowns have
occurred.

Radiation From Fukushima Would Take 7 Days To Reach U.S. Monday,
March 14, 2011

Prevailing wind conditions would send fallout drifting towards west
coast cities. Radioactive particles from the stricken Fukushima
nuclear facility would take around a week to reach Alaska and eleven
days to reach Los Angeles, according to an Accuweather.com analysis,
which highlights the fact that prevailing winds over the region would
send any potential fallout from the crisis-hit plant drifting towards
west coast cities in the United States. Given the fact that many
analysts believe the Japanese government is grossly understating the
amount of radioactive particles released by the two separate
explosions to affect the Fukushima plant, one which occurred Saturday
and one earlier today, monitoring stations in Alaska will not know if
there is a threat from such radiation until Saturday at the
earliest. “Radiation detected at the Fukushima plant on Monday is
twice the maximum seen so far,” the BBC is reporting, citing Kyodo
News.

NOTE: Rosalind notes yesterday that the U.S. government had done
absolutely nothing in the way of alerting people on the west coast to
any possibility of danger. She goes on to explain that since the
U.S. is forging ahead with plans to build numerous new nuclear
plants, they don’t want any ‘bad press’ for nuclear energy!

Fukushima explosions
Detailed advice will be issued as more information about releases
becomes available.
Monday: The violence of the explosion in Reactor No. 3 gives us
reason to doubt official statements that the containment vessel is
intact. We note that the US navy, having detected radioactivity on
its ships 100 miles offshore, is retreating. Unless and until there
is good evidence that Reactor 3 is intact it is prudent to assume
that some of its fuel is now airborne, as was the case at Chernobyl
in 1986. Chernobyl fallout was wind-borne all round the world,
causing detectable and significant health detriment in many countries.
As in earlier statements, we warn that reassurances from all agencies
about health risks from radioactive pollution are based on the
invalid and discredited radiation risk model of the International
Commission or Radiological Protection (ICRP), according to which the
Chernobyl disaster can not have caused any observable health effects
in the general population.
Immediate precautions for populations downwind of Fukushima are to
stay indoors. Do not eat local produce; drink bottled water.

There is now an urgent need for independent monitoring of radiation
exposures.

THE crew of the US aircraft carrier, on a humanitarian mission to
Japan, received a month’s worth of radiation in about an hour, a US
newspaper reported yesterday.

The fleet said that the radiation was from a plume of smoke and steam
released from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The US Seventh Fleet has now moved its ships and aircraft away from
the nuclear power plant after discovering low-level radioactive
contamination.

reactor.html?ref=asia

So far, Japanese officials have said the melting of the nuclear cores
in the two plants is assumed to be “partial,” and the amount of
radioactivity measured outside the plants, though twice the level
Japan considers safe, has been relatively modest.

But Pentagon officials reported Sunday that helicopters flying 60
miles from the plant picked up small amounts of radioactive
particulates — still being analyzed, but presumed to include
cesium-137 and iodine-121 — suggesting widening environmental
contamination.

Expert: Nuclear Radiation Could Spread Far Beyond Japan

An American nuclear expert says radiation from Japan could spread
across the Pacific and reach the United States if a complete meltdown
occurs at a Japanese nuclear facility damaged as a result of last
week’s earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

Nuclear expert Joseph Cirincione of the Ploughshares Fund says
Japan’s nuclear crisis is in a critical phase.

“One of the [Japanese] reactors has had half the core exposed
already. This is the one they are now flooding with seawater in a
desperate effort to prevent a complete meltdown.”

Cirincione spoke on the Fox News Sunday television program. He said
the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on Japan’s northeast coast is
one of at least three nuclear facilities at risk.

Japan has evacuated civilians from areas surrounding the troubled
plant, but Cirincione says radiation could spread far beyond Japan if
efforts to contain the crisis fail.

“The worst-case scenario is that the fuel rods fuse together –
temperatures get so hot that [they] melt together into a radioactive
molten mass that busts through the containment mechanisms. So they
spew radioactivity into the ground, into the air, into the water.
Some of that radioactivity could carry in the atmosphere to the west
coast of the United States.”
