Welcome to On the Brink Radio #250…one/fourth of the way to a thousand!
This show, recorded on and around the local golf course here at Wamberal NSW, is a collection of observations and commentary on a variety of topics, including the on-going eruptions and associated volcanic activity on the Big Island of Hawai’i; an up-turn in whale strandings after a period of relative calm; an attack on my marine biologist friend in Kauai, Terry Lilley; comet Wirtanen visible to the naked eye in December; and the beauty and power of Mother Nature, all over and especially down under.

HAWAI’IAN VOLCANOS UPDATE
MICK KALBER’S LATEST VIDEO
https://vimeo.com/271780748
“Lava from the current Leilani Estates flow on the Big Island of Hawaii continues to pour into the ocean just southwest of Pohoiki. Numerous fissures continue to spew lava, some fountaining, others oozing. Five fissures have opened up atop the May 6th Luana and Makamae flow just below. Those fissures appear to be spreading lava in both directions… across Leilani to the north, and toward Malama to the south, and downslope, of course. Huge cracks have appeared half way up the subdivision, particularly on the Malama side of Pomaikai. Over the past several days, Pele has ventured uprift… the question is how far up will she go? Also of note are fissures 5 and 6 at the bottom of Leilani. They have gone from oozing to fountaining, destroyed several structures at the old state Geothermal test site and are now creating a “perched pond,” a sizable raised lava lake between the fissures. Meanwhile Fissure 22, the largest of them all recently has begun to slow down a bit. The recent activity near the PGV Geothermal plant has not moved much closer to the facility… the breakouts nearby have been pouring a huge volume of lava downslope and ponding. Both a’a and pahoehoe flows continue to pour over the sea cliffs in great volume just southwest of Pohoiki. Numerous fingers of lava have stretched toward the sea over the past several days, covering many properties… destroying some homes, and sliding by others. Dozens of homes have been destroyed since the eruption began nearly three weeks ago. Although it began in Leilani and burned several homes there, she soon established her vents below the subdivision with towering fountains, spatter cones feeding gigantic lava flows. So far, no deaths have been reported. Pohoiki Road and Highway 137 have both been covered with lava, but Highway 132 is still open as of this writing. More tomorrow!”
MICK’S ‘PELE’S PLATYPUS’ VIDEO FROM 22 MAY

NOTE: At around the 1:30 mark in the lower right corner you can clearly see a platypus made of lava with a bill, eyes and little feets…I kid you not, check out Pele’s Platypus 🙂

TERRY LILLEY SWIMMING WITH SHARKS
TERRY’S OTB INTERVIEW FROM A FEW WEEKS AGO
https://soundcloud.com/user-908215348/on-the-brink-radio-248-terry-lilley-hawaiian-geo-terrorism-update
Last week Terry was camping out when a Parks Ranger came and harassed him, taking his camping and dive gear illegally. Terry subsequently hid his cameras and hard-drives and has been pursuing legal retaliation. This was a totally fascist occurrence probably designed to intimidate Terry into leaving the island, where he is a major thorn in the ass par excellence of all the military, bureaucratic and financial corruption that purports to rule the roost there…their main goal at this time is to ‘MAKE HAWAI’I SAFE FOR RIMPAC’ coming up in June-July.

ASKING FOR TROUBLE WITH A CAPITAL ‘T’
Astronomers around the world prepare for a close approach of comet Wirtanen in mid-December, when it will pass within 30 lunar distances of Earth and is expected to be visible to the naked eye for quite a while. I am planning an interview with researcher Greg Doppman of the Keck Observatory on the infrared spectrometer they are constructing to assist in the study of Wirtanen.
BUNGAREE NORAGH, AWABAKAL SACRED DREAMING SITE
Meanwhile I am concluding an awesome visit to the Central Coast ‘whale dreaming’ country of NSW in the lovely ‘land down under’, and the beautiful Norah Head who invited me to visit her this week. Many thanks to the Buddhist Meditation centre, the Baiame dreaming rock-art site at Bulgandry, and the local florae and fauna, especially the gum trees and ‘cassi’s’ or casuarinas with whom I communed in Hawai’i, as well as the over 20 species of birds who I hang out with every morning over at the golf course, including the small flock of black cocktatoos who came to visit today.
Tomorrow I am off to Melbourne to spend a day at the William Ricketts Sanctuary and then am off to Tasmania to visit my lovely family there for a while before heading west to the Flinders Ranges and back to Alice Springs.
MAY GODDESS BLESS THE HOMO SAPIENS 🙂
