No, not New Zealand!
Tolkein set his fictional Middle Earth in the area we now call Northern Europe, in a land now long vanished, but once filled with different races and cultures, gigantic pachyderms, wolves, bears and saber-toothed monsters. Incredibly, such a place did exist, it is known as Doggerland, and like Atlantis, sank beneath the waves in a catastrophe of staggering proportions.
I’m always on the lookout for great documentaries, but all too often they end up being either a pot boiler, a sermon on “Climate Change”, a politically slanted narrative, or lead down the speculative “Aliens did it” path.
