“We are all children of the universe…”

From Jeff Wefferson

“We are all children of the universe.
Billions of years before we were born, the furnace of the stars made, in prolific abundance, the basic chemicals which are needed for all of life, and the supernovas gave up  their lives to make all of the heavier chemicals and trace metal which our bodies need to properly function. More than four billion years ago our planet earth was formed…How grateful we must be for this magnificent gift of life and all we have needed to sustain it over the last hundreds of thousands of years! Yet, today it is under threats never felt before in its entire unfolding journey! While the earth’s human civic community has been trying to rid itself of nuclear weapons over the last 65 years, some economically developed nations have quietly moved into the realm of geo-warfare. Geo-weaponry has recently been introduced to the public as a ‘new’ high tech way to mitigate the effects of ‘global warming’, and it is being called ‘geo-engineering’.

Geo-engineering is defined as planetary-scale environmental engineering of our atmosphere: that is, manipulating our weather, our oceans, and our home planet itself. The methods that are being proposed in geo-engineering are already a reality without public participation in debate, prior public notification, or democratic oversight. They are based on a deep understanding of the earth system, learned through space exploration, and are staggering in number and scope.” DR. ROSALIE BERTELL“Dear Jeff,Thanks for the DVDs and the gorgeous turtle rock!  My book: Planet Earth: the Latest Weapon of War, was published in 2000. I recently updated it, and it was published in German last December. The update in English will be sent to a publisher sometime this year. I still have copies of the 2000 edition which I would send you if you provide a mailing address.Rosalie”

“If we don’t begin by changing ourselves, by reprogramming our daily routines, we stand no chance whatsoever of affecting the behaviour of the U.S. Navy or the global army of energy and resource extraction corporations.” Jeff PhillipsCan I quote you in my article for the Pacific Ecologist? Can I use some of the pictures you are sending? Are they copy righted? Who took them? Thanks!Rosalie’s last email to me, April 2012, in response to blog post

EMAILS FROM ROSALIE, 2012“The world of nuclear awareness activism mourns the passing of Dr. Rosalie Bertell, who for decades carried the torch of truth regarding the greatest threat to life on Earth and worked tirelessly to educate a slumbering public.  I was fortunate to be in touch with her over the past year and sent her a hand-painted rock that she loved.  She sent me an autographed copy of her book Planet Earth:  Latest Weapon of War in which she presented massive evidence about the ‘new generation’ of radio-frequency weapons like HAARP that have made atomic weapons obsolete except as biological agents.  Her last email to me was asking my permission to use part of an article I posted about the military threats to the whales and dolphins.  She was working closely with Dr. Claudia von Werlhof to promote awareness about HAARP, ‘geo-engineering’ and microwave weapons systems.  A new edition of her Planet Earth has come out in German and will soon be available in English.  Rosalie, we love you and are sending you love and light on your journey.  See you there…”JEFF PHILLIPS, SYNTHAISSANCE EMAIL ‘RAINBOWS FOR ROSALIE’ JUNE 2012

“The radiations that pour upon the Earth cause the biosphere to take on properties unknown to lifeless planetary surfaces, and thus transform the face of the Earth. Activated by radiation, the matter of the biosphere collects and redistributes solar energy and converts it ultimately into free energy capable of doing work on Earth.”

“Thought isn’t a form of energy. So how on Earth can it change material processes? That question has still not been answered.”

“Living matter is the most powerful geological force.”

“More than 22 years have passed since the Chernobyl catastrophe burst upon and
changed our world. In just a few days, the air, natural waters, flowers, trees, woods,
rivers, and seas turned to potential sources of danger to people, as radioactive substances
emitted by the destroyed reactor fell upon all life. Throughout the Northern Hemisphere
radioactivity covered most living spaces and became a source of potential harm for all
living things.

Naturally, just after the failure, public response was very strong and demonstrated mistrust
of atomic engineering. Owing to the polarization of the problem…apologists of nuclear
power  began a blackout on data  concerning the actual amounts of radioactive emissions,
the doses of  radiation, and the increasing  morbidity among the people that were affected.

When it became impossible to hide the obvious increase in radiation-related diseases,
attempts were made to explain it away as being a result of nationwide fear. At the
same time some concepts of modern radiobiology were suddenly revised. For example,
contrary to elementary observations about the nature of the primary interactions of
ionizing radiation and the molecular structure of cells, a campaign began to deny non-
threshold radiation effects. On the basis of the effects of small doses of radiation in some
nonhuman systems where hormesis was noted, some scientists began to insist that such
doses from Chernobyl would actually benefit humans and all other living things.”

“A law is but a deduction from experience and experiment, and therefore laws must conform with historical facts, not facts with law.”“Great catastrophes of the past accompanied by electrical discharges and followed by radioactivity could have produced sudden and multiple mutations of the kind achieved today by experimenters, but on an immense scale.  The past of mankind, and of the plant and animal kingdoms, too, must now be viewed in the light of the experience of Hiroshima and no longer from the portholes of the Beagle.”IMMANUEL VELIKOVSKY, Earth in Upheaval, chapter 15, “Cataclysmic Evolution”

NOTE FROM JEFF: This weekend is going to be a celestial and cosmic extravaganza…on Sunday morning around 8 a.m. Tasmania time is the boreal winter solstice, and a few hours later is the new moon AND an annular eclipse visible across south-central Africa and Indonesia. Beginning a few days ago we have the helical rising of Venus, and the helical rising of the Pleiades as well..signalling the Maori new year called Matariki. AND this morning was an occultation of Venus by the moon which I missed due to cloud, AND late June marks the beginning of the first of two Encke windows of 2020. Get your optics cleaned and get ready to transduce some healing energies from the heart of the universe…SHE LOVES US or else we wouldn’t be here! All this is the topic of next week’s show 🙂
A wintry good morning from north-central Tasmania. No ice this week, and I had a lovely swim in the ocean on Sunday. The water temp was a balmy 13C but the wind was roaring…as it does in the ‘roaring forties’…at around 60+ km/hr. Chilly but not quite Wim Hoffian 🙂

14 June was the 8th anniversary of Dr. Rosalie Bertell’s journey to beyond the brink of ordinary reality.  She was an extraordinary ‘Rachel Carson of today’…a Catholic nun, medical doctor, fire-brand nuclear awareness activist, ecological and health visionary, vanguard environmental warfare educator, guardian of life on Mother Earth and a lovely spirit.

I didn’t get to meet her but we communicated quite a bit by email. On 14 June 2012 Liesbet and I were on Aotea, or Great Barrier Island, New Zealand. Rain cleared and a huge beautiful double rainbow appeared, but not only that, the whole sky was filled with a golden glow, unlike anything I’ve ever seen. We stood out in it for hours. Only the next day did I realize that Rosalie had passed away…possibly at the exact moment of the rainbow blessing.

Her beautiful spirit is with me a lot these days. What she was all about is probably closer to what I am all about than any other single individual person I have ever known.

I first heard of her work doing research on the global nuclear scenario in 2003, when I began to learn about the insidious existence and effects of DU, an acronym for the Orwellian euphemism ‘depleted uranium’…the residue from uranium processing combined with the highest level of radio-active waste from power generation and weapons manufacture manufactured into bullets and artillery shells, as well as ballast for ships and airplanes. I got a copy of her book No Immediate Danger:  Prognosis for a Radio-active Earth.

This book tells the story of THE single greatest threat to life on Mother Earth that has ever existed short of impacts by comets or asteroids:  the global nuclear scenario. Unlike cometary impacts, the global nuclear scenario is a creation of ‘man, the wise’, but whose effects on life are equally catastrophic.

In a nutshell, in violation of the Hopi admonition ‘If we dig precious things from the land we will invite disaster’ which I first heard from Thomas Banyacya, we mined uranium, ‘split the atom’, created the atomic bomb and used it on civilian populations, continued with an ‘arms race’ yielding tens of thousands of missiles and warheads, conducted over 2000 atmospheric ‘tests’, created over 1,000 reactors in which ‘the peaceful atom’ generating electricity ‘too cheap to meter’ continues to amass unbelievably astronomical quantities of THE most deadly substances known to exist…almost 2000 synthetic radio-nuclides, each of which is carcinogenic and mutagenic and has a half-life ranging from hours to millions of years. One spent fuel rod contains enough plutonium to destroy all life on Earth many times over. One reactor site has hundreds of thousands of spent fuel rods sitting in precarious semi-containment. Around 1,000 reactor sites exist. U.S. air-craft carriers exist powered by 8 reactors on one vessel. Do the math if you can muster enough zeroes.

‘Nuclear war’ is not stuff blowing up but the dissemination of lethal radio-nuclides throughout the biosphere, which has been on-going since 16 July 1945. All reactors and storage facilities leak; biometric statistics reveal spikes in oncogenetic syndromes like leukemia around every reactor site. Accidents like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima have been super-novas of contamination; and the on-going use of DU continues to irradiate personnel and to broadcast nuclear pestilence ‘blowin’ in the wind.’ As Rosalie said, ‘We don’t need to commit suicide.’ The gun has been aimed and the trigger pulled. At least 25 generations of people need to be studied in order truly to understand the genetic effects, but we of today are only the third generation to exist since all this stuff came into being. More than being guinea pigs, we are sacrificial lambs.

“…used nuclear fuel, some of it decades old, languishes in holding tanks. Oddly, it is up to a million times more radioactive than when it was fresh. While in the reactor, it began mutating into elements heavier than enriched uranium, such as isotopes of plutonium and americium…At WIPP…the U.S. Department’ of Energy is legally required to dissuade anyone from coming too close for the next 10,000 years. After discussing the fact that human languages mutate so fast that they’re almost unrecognizable after 500 or 600 years, it was decided to post warnings in seven of them anyway, plus pictures…Since Palo Verde opened in 1986, its used fuel has been accumulating, because there’s nowhere else to take it. In plants everywhere, spent fuel ponds have been re-racked to squeeze in thousands of more fuel assemblies.”

‘HOT LEGACY’ from The World Without Us, Alan Weissman

Rosalie’s singular focus and purpose was to discover, understand and communicate about the greatest threats to human and ecological health and well-being that exist. She didn’t beat around the bush, chin-wag about herself, solicit money for non-profit organizations, endorse political candidates, attend protests, sign petitions, market health products or proclaim that it’s all A-OK because the Lord will save us. She stood up for indigenous people, our non-human families of life, for Mother Earth herself with action based on reality.

I just watched a fantastic hour-long video of Rosalie. This is a beautiful sharing…it has her speaking concise reality, mildly scientific at the minimum necessary level of understanding that people need, conveying relevant information on urgent topics, with love and respect for all of life…in the truest possible spirit of Rachel Carson.

‘MUNAMADNY SEA-DREAMING’ Jeff Phillips/Liesbet Verstraeten

“In listening to Earth’s Living Water it was like she was sitting here talking to me. She speaks with great love and great knowledge, detailed and coherent information that paints in details of humanity’s health and ecological issues…woven together inseparably as they truly are. She is never far from emphasizing the existence of non-human life and their equal importance. She covers the full spectrum of issues and seamlessly breaches the unspoken taboo of mentioning the military as the greatest polluter and destroyer of life. She talks solid issues and information from a perspective of love of life and being a true guardian or kaitiaki as the Maoris say. She makes me think of myself and how I think…this is why we appreciated each other…me appreciating her now more than ever. In looking through my emails I remembered that we corresponded a good deal more than I had remembered. She even sent me an autographed copy of Planet Earth.

She passed away in June 2012. This was when Liesbet and I were peaking out with awareness and activism…we were having articles in magazines and being interviewed on radio shows and completed the trailer to our ‘beyond film’ about the whales and projects…a project that has evolved now to be a series of ‘beyond films’ which I am working on now. I began doing On the Brink radio that December, had Rosalie still been with us she would have been one of the first people i would have interviewed and probably would have several times.

She was a true educator and put the responsibility for healing Mother Earth directly where it should be:  on US…each and every one of us…not on some nebulous ‘them’ out there, whether they be money-devouring ngo’s like Greenpeace or government agencies who used to work but not any more, like the EPA and FDA. She wasn’t afraid to talk about litigation and legal issues, and she surely wasn’t telling us to sit back, the Lord is in control and all that!
The global nuclear scenario was never swept under her carpet or off her radar, and he had a special fondness for the whales and dolphins that was a common wavelength that connected us…then and now.”

Rosalie’s contribution to understanding the real threats to health and life from all things nuclear would have established her as a legendary activist and educator, but she didn’t stop there. She could easily have said ‘Hey, I’ve done my part, I’m going to sit back and relax and leave it to the next generation. Maybe I’ll move to Tahiti and sip some coconut milk……’

But this was not to be, not even possible. Why? Because unlike the vast majority of so-called educators and activists of today, Rosalie didn’t look on this work as her ‘job’ that she could eventually step back from, or something that she felt obliged to do…she took it on herself to probe the deepest depths of the whole military-industrial complex because it was…and IS…the greatest enemy of life but worse, it is of our own creation, and she was in a unique position to come to grips with it all…because she loved and I will say LOVES LIFE, hoped and HOPES that we might successfully renavigate the human process away from the brink of annihilation and to bring forth a true ‘new dreaming’, a rebirth and renewal of life on Mother Earth, where all beings can be peaceful, and all beings can be happy.

More than just about any other person I’ve known, along with Rachel Carson and Carl Sagan, Rosalie embodied and embodies the very essence of being a true crew member of Spaceship Earth, not just a passenger, and her work is a testament to resolving the vast contradictions plaguing the world of today.

“We travel together, passengers on a little spaceship, dependent upon its vulnerable reserves of air and soil, all committed for our safety to its security and peace; preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and, I will say, the love we give our fragile craft. We cannot maintain it half fortunate, half miserable, half confident, half despairing, half slave to the ancient enemies of man, half free in a liberation of resources undreamed of until this day. No craft, no crew can travel safely with such vast contradictions. On their resolution depends the survival of us all.”

“…debate on weather modification for military use has become a scientific taboo. Military analysts are mute on the subject. Meteorologists are not investigating the matter and environmentalists are focused on greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol. Neither is the possibility of climatic or environmental manipulations as part of a military and intelligence agenda, while tacitly acknowledged, part of the broader debate on climate change under UN auspices.”

ROSALIND PETERSON“The United States Navy will be decimating millions of marine mammals and other aquatic life, each year, for the next five years, under their Warfare Testing Range Complex Expansions in the Atlantic, Pacific, and the Gulf of Mexico. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS under NOAA), has already approved the ‘taking’ of marine mammals in more than a dozen Navy Range Warfare Testing Complexes (6), and is preparing to issue another permit for 11.7 millions marine mammals (32 Separate Species), to be decimated along the Northern, California, Oregon and Washington areas of the Pacific Ocean (7).U.S. Department of Commerce – NOAA (NMFS) Definition: ‘TAKE’ Defined under the MMPA as ‘harass, hunt, capture, kill or collect, or attempt to harass, hunt, capture, kill or collect.’ Defined under the ESA as ‘harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, or collect, or to attempt to engage in any such conduct.’ Definition: Incidental Taking: An unintentional, but not unexpected taking (12).The total number of marine mammals that will be decimated in the Atlantic, Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico for the next five years is unknown. The NMFS approvals will have a devastating impact upon the marine mammal populations worldwide and this last Navy permit, which is expected to be issued in February 2010, for the ‘taking’ of more than 11.7 million marine mammals in the Pacific will be the final nail in the coffin for any healthy populations of sea life to survive.”

3. The Navy will also be conducting classified future warfare testing. Since the public is not to be informed of those tests, chemicals being used, electromagnetic weapons systems, and other air or land based tests, who is protecting sea life, human health, water, soil, and air from pollution and other experimental tests?4. Human health from airborne pollutants, toxic debris, and shoreline contamination from toxic chemicals should also be considered in the NMFS evaluation. The protection of cruise ships, fishermen, ocean tourists, U.S. Coastguard personnel, and the public who swim in the ocean should also be considered in their evaluations. This is not just a marine mammal issue.”

High Altitude Auroral Research Project (HAARP)

The weapons and their effects are described in the following pages. The United States Navy and Air Force have joined with the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, to build a prototype for a ground based ‘Star Wars’ weapon system located in the remote bush country of Alaska.HAARP Boils the Upper AtmosphereHAARP will zap the upper atmosphere with a focused and steerable electromagnetic beam. It is an advanced model of an ‘ionospheric heater.’ (The ionosphere is the electrically-charged sphere surrounding Earth’s upper atmosphere. It ranges between 40 to 60 miles above the surface of the Earth.)Put simply, the apparatus for HAARP is a reversal of a radio telescope; antenna send out signals instead of receiving. HAARP is the test run for a super-powerful radio-wave-beaming technology that lifts areas of the ionosphere by focusing a beam and heating those areas. Electromagnetic waves then bounce back onto earth and penetrate everything — living and dead.HAARP publicity gives the impression that the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program is mainly an academic project with the goal of changing the ionosphere to improve communications for our own good. However, other U.S. military documents put it more clearly — HAARP aims to learn how to ‘exploit the ionosphere for Department of Defense purposes.’ Communicating with submarines is only one of those purposes.”
“Debate on weather modification for military use has become a scientific taboo.”

In the decade since Canadian university professor and investigative researcher Michael Chossudovsky made this observation, the

“…inevitable technological confluence of the work of Tesla and Bernays” has unleashed “…the greatest engineering feat ever under-taken, a project so huge and pervasive that even the scientist-priests of Atlantis would shrink in awe in its shadow…an operation so complex and secretive that it would make the Manhattan Project look like a box of tinker-toys…a project of unimaginable military and industrial prowess and sophistication involving the simultaneous manipulation and attempted control of Earth’s entire atmospheric, lithospheric, ecological, hydrological and geo-physical processes, and the real-time modulation and orchestration of humanity’s genomic and ‘reality management systems’, that is, our brains, minds, and DNA, involving genetic, bio-chemical, neuro-physiological, cognitive, semantic, psychic and full-spectrum information disorder warfare techniques; the raison d’etre of the entire military-industrial complex.”

Rosalie could have retired from the front lines of activism, but being who and what she was and is…a true embodiment not only of Rachel Carson but also of any genuine spiritual icon or leader…take your pick from Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, you name him/her…in fact, to me, Rosalie and Rachel Carson, along with people like Carl Sagan, Rosalind Peterson and Nick Begich stand head and halo far above the mythical and nebulous personae with whom humanity obsesses over…retirement from the line of duty was not an option.

Rosalie was one of the few educators and activists who could not only see the ‘elephant in the living room’ of the entire military-industrial complex as the greatest threat to life ever to exist, but wasn’t afraid to identify it and to help us to overcome denial and to realize that it is part of the built-in destructivenss of what we glorify as ‘civilization.’

Dr. Nick Begich made an astronomical contribution with his revelations of H.A.A.R.P. years before it came into existence. What he and Jeanne Manning did was the equivalent of someone discovering the Manhattan Project and telling the world about before the detonation of the first atomic bomb.

Rosalind Peterson did endless battle with the forces of global toxicity and ecocide, identifying in great detail environmental dangers from chemical toxicity, geneticallly modified organisms, the ‘hippopotamus in the bath-tub’ of the U.S. Navy’s war on marine life, and planetary geo-engineering involving weather warfare and climatological disruption.

Rosalie’s book Planet Earth: Latest Weapon of War brought together all of this information and clearly laid out the blue-print for what was then the ‘new paradigm’…what Zbigniew Brzezinski called the ‘technetronic era’ in which wealthy elites “unrestrained by traditional political and moral values’ would wage “full spectrum dominance” using technologies made possible by the “revolution in military affairs”…weaponizing the body of Mother Earth and transforming the bio-, hydro-, and atmospheres as well as low-orbital space into battle-fields.

“What is planned now are climate and weather wars, wars in which earthquakes and volcanoes, floods and droughts, hurricanes and monsoon rains will play a role.“

“The officially announced reasons for so called climate change that have been identified as being caused by CO2 emissions, proves to be a falsehood deliberately introduced into the world in order to obscure the reasons for the large number of changes occurring in nature.”

Dr. Claudia von Werlhof, 2015

Claudia von Werlhof worked closely with Rosalie in her last year and is currently not only ‘carrying the torch’ of what Rosalie was and is all about, but taking this work and mission to the next level with her own research into the destructive legacy of ‘patriarchy’ and the ‘hatred of life’ that seems to characterize the western world’s true relationship with Mother Earth and life as we know her.

With an informed and enlightened understanding of the ‘technetronic era’, its technologies, methodologies and imperatives comes awareness of how our minds and brains have been hijacked by the same vast array of weapons systems now aimed at Mother Earth, not only at the levels of meaning and information, but at the physiological and neurobiological levels as well.

To say that mass-communication is the most pervasive and ubiquitous weapons system in use is an understatement; ‘climate change’ and ‘corona-virus’ are the most recent examples of false-flag disaster marketing whose true nature lies in the shadowy domains of think-tanks, public relations firms and the intelligence community’s strangle-hold on mass-media far more than having anything to do with atmospheric dynamics or viral epidemiology.

Here is an interview I did with Claudia on my show, and some recent articles in which she puts all this into perspective.

What I am doing with this post is to honour and show immense appreciation to and for who are truly my biggest heroes of the human species, to share their vital world-views and leading-edge information, to elicit a sense of urgency here on the brink of the unknown, and to inspire us all to ask more of ourselves and to do our best to heal the out-of-balance state of koyaanisqasti, to bring back light and love for mitakuye oyasin, all our relations.

Claudia is currently writing her magnum opus as well as organizing tributes to Rosalie and the release of an updated edition of Planet Earth which has been translated into many languages. She has invited me to contribute to a publication in honour of Rosalie and her work, which this post will probably be part of.

This post became so in-depth that I can hardly do justice to my favourite Russian minds and I will be doing an upcoming broadcast of OTB entirely dedicated to them, but will mention a few briefly here.  In recent years I have been learning a lot about Russia as more or less the unacknowledged twin of America with respect to breadth and depth of culture and contribution…equivalent yet unknown to the western mentality due to decades of being demonized behind the ‘iron curtain’ and ‘cold war’ mentalities promulgated by the powers that be.

We have all heard of Stalin and Khrushchev, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky, Dostoyevsky and Solzhenitsyn, Mendeleev and Pavlov, Gagarin and Tereshkova (the first woman in space).

Here are a few whose work has particular significance to me.

DR. ALEXEY YABLOKOV (left) and DR. CHRIS BUSBY Alexey was honoured as the ‘father of Russian environmentalism’ and was a marine biologist who became an out-spoken nuclear awareness activist and educator. A lot of his work had to do with the contamination of the ocean by radio-nuclides, and he co-authored the apocryphal book Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment, which is a state-of-the-art presentation of the realities of this disaster as well as an indictment of all-things-nuclear.

He loved the whales and dolphins, as did Rosalie, and I got in touch with him and sent him a painted rock. He reciprocated by sending me an autographed copy of this book. I tried to get him to do an interview with me, even managing to get my questions translated into Russian, but he backed out due to time constraints.

“Yablokov commanded a broad environmental and political mandate in Russia, and published over 500 papers on biology, ecology, natural conservation and numerous textbooks on each of these subjects. He founded Russia’s branch of Greenpeace and was the leader of the Green Russia faction of the Yabloko opposition party. While serving as environmental advisor to President Boris Yeltsin’s from 1989 to 1992, Yablokov published a searing white paper that detailed the gravity of the radiological threat posed by dumped military reactors and scuttled nuclear submarines in the Arctic. The catalogue of waste dumped at sea by the Soviets, includes some 17,000 containers of radioactive waste, 19 ships containing radioactive waste, 14 nuclear reactors, including five that still contain spent nuclear fuel; 735 other pieces of radioactively contaminated heavy machinery, and the K-27 nuclear submarine with its two reactors loaded with nuclear fuel.Yablokov’s white paper spearheaded an epoch of environmental openness that led to more than $3 billion in international aid to Russia to clean up 200 decommissioned submarines and to secure decades of military nuclear waste.”

I will let investigative researcher William Engdahl tell the story, from his book Myths, Lies and Oil Wars.. It has to do with the abiogenic nature of hydro-carbons.

“As I searched more translations of the Russian scientific abiotic papers, I dug deeper. I learned of the highly-classified Soviet era research begun in the 1950s at onset of the Cold War. Stalin had given a mandate to the leading Soviet geo-scientists to, simply put, insure that the USSR was entirely self-sufficient in oil and gas. They should not repeat the fatal error that had contributed to Germany’s losing two world wars–lack of oil self-sufficiency.

Being serious scientists, they took nothing for granted. They began their work with an exhaustive search of  world scientific literature for rigorous proof of the genesis of hydrocarbons, beginning with the accepted fossil fuel theory. To their shock, the found not one serious scientific proof in the entire literature.

I then read of the cross-disciplinary researches by academics such as Professor V.A. Krayushkin, head of the Department of Petroleum Exploration in the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev, one of the leading abiotic scientists.

Krayushkin presented a paper following the end of the Cold War to a 1994 Santa Fe, New Mexico conference of DOSECC (Drilling, Observation and Sampling of the Earth’s Continental Crust). There Krayushkin presented his researches of the Dnieper-Donets region of Ukraine. Traditional mainstream geology would have argued that that region would be barren of oil or gas. Traditionally-trained geologists had argued it senseless to drill for oil or gas there because of the complete absence of any “source rock” — the special geological formations which, according to Western geological theory, were the unique rocks from which hydrocarbons were generated or were capable of being generated – presumably, the only places where oil could be found, hence the term “source.”

What Krayushkin presented to the disbelieving audience of American geologists and geo-scientists went against their entire oil genesis training. Krayushkin argued that the oil and gas discoveries in the Ukraine basin came from what geologists called ‘crystalline basement,’ deep rocks where Western geological theory claimed oil and gas (which they termed ‘fossil fuels,’) could not be found. No dinosaur fossils nor tree remains could have been buried so deep, the Western theory went.

Yet the Russians had found oil and gas there, something tantamount to Galileo Galilei telling the Holy Inquisition that the Sun — and not the Earth — was the center of our system. According to one participant, the audience was not at all amused by the implications of Russian geophysics.

The speaker from Kiev went on to tell the scientists at Santa Fe, New Mexico that the Ukrainian team’s efforts to look for oil where conventional theory insisted no oil could be found had, in fact, yielded a bonanza in commercial oil and gas fields.”

Vernadsky was a kind of ‘Renaissance person’ and is known for his broad-band conceptual frame-works of the biosphere and noosphere

“The first scientist to undertake a serious study of the dynamic relationship between life and the Earth as a whole was the Russian geochemist Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky. Born in 1863 and educated in St. Petersburg, Munich and Paris, by 1900 he was well-known both as a geologist and as a liberal opponent of Tsarist autocracy. A founder of the Constitutional Democratic (Kadet) Party and member of its central committee for many years, he represented the universities’ constituency in the Duma (Parliament) from 1906 to 1911, when he resigned to protest government attacks on academic freedom. In 1915, he founded the Commission for the Study of the Natural Productive Forces of Russia (KEPS), to identify sources of strategic raw materials: its work continued under the Soviet government until 1930. Although he opposed the Bolshevik revolution, he resigned from the Kadets when the party supported military action against the new government. After the Civil War, he returned to Petrograd and resumed his position as head of the Academy of Sciences.Vernadsky’s focus on biogeochemistry — he created both the word and the science —reflected his conviction that the composition and principal characteristics of our planet could not be explained by geology and chemistry alone. ‘I realized,’ he later wrote, ‘that the basis of geology lies in the chemical element — in the atom — and that living organisms play a prominent role, perhaps the leading one, in our natural environment — the biosphere.’He summarized his views in 1926 in the pathbreaking book Biosfera (The Biosphere). Geologists had long recognized the existence of three “envelopes” surrounding the Earth’s crust — atmosphere (air), hydrosphere (water), and lithosphere (soil and rock). The biosphere was a fourth, ‘a specific, life-saturated envelope of the Earth’s crust,’ comprising all living matter on Earth, and all parts of Earth where life exists, from the crust to the upper atmosphere. His argument was revolutionary in two major respects: it treated the entire planet as an object of study, and it identified life itself as a major factor in creating shaping the planet.‘No chemical force on Earth is more constant than living organisms taken in aggregate, none is more powerful in the long run. The more we learn, the more convinced we become that biospheric chemical phenomena never occur independent of life.  …“Life is, thus, potently and continuously disturbing the chemical inertia on the surface of our planet. It creates the colors and forms of nature, the associations of animals and plants, and the creative labor of civilized humanity. And also becomes a part of the diverse chemical processes of the Earth’s crust. There is no substantial chemical equilibrium on the crust in which the influence of life is not evident, and in which chemistry does not display life’s work.”https://climateandcapitalism.com/2018/06/05/vladimir-vernadsky-and-the-disruption-of-the-biosphere/

In 1979 when I’d been painting for only a year, an art professor at the University of Richmond in Virginia saw a painting I’d just done and he said ‘Jeff, you’re the Kandinsky of today.’ It was a compliment, I understood, but only many years later did I come to understand what a huge compliment it was. Coming from a background of scientific education, I had no idea who Kandinsky was, but later on came to learn that he was regarded as the ‘father of abstraction.’ Apparently he was the first artist in the European tradition to venture from portraits and still-lifes and landscapes into the world’s of non-representation and symbols.

The painting the art professor was quite similar to this one, a style I called ‘visual noise’ and later developed into my ‘non-repeating organic tapestry’ motif.

To me Velikovsky was one of the top minds of the 20th century. He was a psycho-analyst by training and profession whose explorations into the human collective psyche took him into astronomy, geology, and cultural anthropology; his insights and observations rocked the world of calcified mainstream scientific dogma in the traditions of Galileo and Copernicus.

COMETS AND ASTEROIDS AS MAJOR INFLUENCES ON LIFE“Great catastrophes of the past accompanied by electrical discharges and followed by radioactivity could have produced sudden and multiple mutations of the kind achieved today by experimenters, but on an immense scale.

“I came upon the idea that traditions and legends and memories of generic origin can be treated in the same way in which we treat in psychoanalysis the early memories of a single individual. I spent ten years on this work. I found that the collective memory of human-kind spoke of a series of global catastrophes that occurred in historical times.”

A well-known radio-astronomer, Shklovsky co-authored a ground-breaking book with Carl Sagan, Intelligent Life in the Universe.”Dr. ShklovskII’s contributions were diverse and, in some cases, basic. Probably the most important, according to Dr. Friedman, was his 1953 proposal that the strange light from such features as the Crab Nebula was synchrotron radiation, generated by electrons whirling in extremely strong magnetic fields. The light had been puzzling because, unlike ordinary light, some of it occurred at all wavelengths instead of being concentrated into spectral lines. It was later found that the Crab Nebula and other remnants of great stellar explosions, or supernovas, emit synchrotron radiation across the full width of the spectrum from radio waves, through visible light, to X-rays.”

” ‘The prey runs to the hunter,’ wrote Iosef Shmuelovich Shklovskii in a letter to me in 1962. Knowing his wide-ranging interests, I had sent him a preprint of a paper of mine called “Direct Contact Among Galactic Civilizations by Relativistic Interstellar Spaceflight,” a speculative exercise on a topic which I thought might interest him. Shklovskii wrote to tell me that he was completing a semi-popular book, Vselennaia, Zhizn, Razum (in English, Universe, Life, Mind). It was being written for the fifth anniversary of the launching of the first Soviet artificial satellite on August 4, 1957. Shklovskii had been about to write a chapter on the possibility of interstellar spaceflight when my preprint arrived, just in time to be partially incorporated into the text. Vselennaia, Zhizn, Razum was published in Moscow in early 1963. Parts of it were also serialized in Komsomolskaya Pravda, and extracts published in the Soviet scientific journal Priroda. It has received enthusiastic acclaim in the Soviet Union and elsewhere, and is being translated into a variety of languages, including Chinese.”

This is one of the many spectacular and highly-active volcanos of north-eastern Russia. Vulcanologist Evginy Markhinin has done pioneering research into the connections between volcanoes and the very origins of life. He has had little work translated into English but I did find this one book. I am actively learning more on his work and am feeling drawn to Kamchatka one of these days, which is kind of like an Imax version of Iceland crossed with Alaska and Canada.

“Some of the things you will read about in this book may remind you of the tales of Baron Münchausen. You will read about red-hot stones erupted by a fiery mountain being used to heat up meals, about a sea-shell that caught a black cormorant, about the golden hair of the goddess of Fire, about the magic fireworks in the crater of the Klyuchevskaya volcano (also known as the Klyuchevskaya Sopka), one of the largest in the world, about fences of whale-bone, about hot springs running down snow-clad mountains, about villages which are heated by subterranean sources, in short, about many curious things. These things are not inventions but really exist in the land of fire-breathing mountains. For many years the author has explored the Kamchatka-Kuril volcanic belt—one of Pluto’s largest chains. Expeditions to study their eruptions were made in summer and winter, spring and autumn. Day after day, for years on end, the members of the expedition led a life that was strenuous but adventurous and full of vivid impressions. They heard the thunder of stone avalanches and landslides, the cannonade of volcanic explosions, heard red-hot stones whistling through the air, the roar of gas jets on the shores of hot lakes formed in craters, over which hang acrid vapours, the babbling of streams and the rumbling of waterfalls gushing down from the glaciers. They felt the fiery breath of hot lava, the trembling of volcanoes, tasted the sour snow on the craters of active volcanoes. They met many “natives” of those remote lands—shaggy bears, red and black foxes, swift-footed deers, big-horned mountain sheep, long-toothed sperm-whales and fat lazy seals. Recounting his adventures, the author tells about the structure of the Earth, about volcanic heat, about magma, the molten rock issuing from the bowels of the Earth.Pluto’s Chain: Explorations of the Kamchatka-Kuril Volcanic Belt

Julia Nazimova is my very favourite Russian..not only because she is who first told me about Evginy Markhinin, and not only because she is a professional geologist who spent ten years on the Kamchatka peninsula and lived in the Shiveluch crater for a whole summer in 1982…but mainly because she is a fantastic and wonderful friend who also happens to be a massage therapist extraordinaire and is the only person I’ve let put their hands on me in many years.

I am talking with her now about making  trip to see some of the amazing volcanoes at Kamchatka. I am feeling very drawn to go there. Miracles are not impossible…just look around 🙂

I will share some of her volcano photos in an upcoming post in their honour.
