This doesn’t seem like a bombshell when a larger date range is used. The relevant months for flu are May to September. In 2019, there were 15,483 deaths during that period. In 2021, there were 15,441 deaths. Actually, in 2017, there were 15,558 deaths. I haven’t calculated the mortality rate but there were less kiwis in 2017, so the 2021 rate would be noticeably lower.
One needs to looks at the relevant data and a long enough time series to be able to make the claim that this is a bombshell. It doesn’t seem to be.
The term “bombshell” came with article Mike. Probably a bit sensationalist but I thought the data therein worth bringing to attention anyway. There is correlation between the vax rollout and a spike in mortality, but putting on my skeptic hat, I would say “correlation isn’t necessarily causation”.
