Last night the author (a Christchurch quake survivor) went out onto our front lawn about 10pm and noted that it was eerily still and quiet with a “heavy” feeling in the air. Old timers referred to this as “earthquake weather”.
Laid in bed a little while later, I noted a very quiet throbbing, pulsing sound like a large generator operating. This persisted for quite some time. Disturbingly, this was similar to the “hum” I experienced twelve years ago when our city was ravaged by earthquakes. This “hum” was also noted in Wellington and Auckland circa 2012: Mysterious hum reported in Wellington | Stuff.co.nz
Then in the early hours of the morning, I was three times awoken by seismic tremors of significant size. Thousand reported feeling these shakes.
Checking the Christchurch Quake Map this morning confirmed the author’s suspicions that all these quakes were located in the familiar “swarm” area from 2010-2013 that appears to have suddenly re-awakened.
This is a sharp change from activity over the past few years which has focused on the Alpine Fault region.
A quick check on a couple of ship-tracker sites showed a vessel of unidentified type heading away from the general area. Whether there is a connection to the quake swarm I do not know but thought the info worth sharing. Martin
