New Zealand Police directive follows the trainwreck directives of California’s law enforcement. And we all saw what happened there. “Help yourselves thieves and brigands: Take what you want just don’t exceed the allowable quota of stolen goods”. Yep, that worked out so well in Cali, we’re going to apply it here in NZ. Great…except it kinda failed over there. MH

Press Release: Sensible Sentencing Trust
The Sensible Sentencing Trust is appalled by the disturbing reports that New Zealand Police have issued a directive to staff to avoid investigating shoplifting cases under $500, or online fraud under $1,000, among other crime thresholds.
Sensible Sentencing Trust spokesperson Louise Parsons condemned the directive as “an outrageous and dangerous move,” saying it sends the wrong message at a time when retailers are struggling under rising crime rates and financial pressure.
“The past five or six years, retailers have been hit with an onslaught of crime, and now they’re being told that crimes under certain thresholds are essentially not worth investigating. Says Radio New Zealand:
The directive said that from 26 March the FMC was applying “nationally standardised value thresholds” when assessing theft and fraud files.
The value thresholds are – general theft $200, petrol drive off $150, shoplifting $500, fraud (paywave, online, scam etc) $1000, and all other fraud $500.
“When assessing files with these offences, you will apply the relevant value threshold and file any file under that threshold regardless of any lines of enquiry or IFA score.”
