The Beast is back. The seismic blaster, the Amazon Warrior, left New Caledonia yesterday.
Next stop: AOTEAROA, NEW ZEALAND.
Its mission: To carry out seismic blasting for oil right in the middle of a blue whale habitat, looking for oil that we cannot afford to burn.
But there’s good news. It doesn’t yet have the paperwork it needs to begin oil exploration in NZ waters. The Government has been sitting on their application since September.
The Government appears to be umming and ahhing, and that’s our shot to make a difference. If we can make a noise about this together, we could give the Government the encouragement they need to turn The Beast around. Please watch and share this video today.
New Zealanders have turned back unwelcome ships before. In 1985, the NZ Government was under huge pressure from the US to let nuclear-fuelled ships dock in New Zealand. But there was huge public outcry. The people of New Zealand spoke up, and the Government turned the ships around.
We turned back the nuclear ships of 1985. We must turn back the oil ships of 2017. Share the video and let’s keep up the pressure.
If we’re to have a future, the oil industry must have no future. In the face of worsening climate change, it’s vital that countries around the world stand up to the fossil fuel industry and embrace the transition to renewable energy. The science on that is clear.
We’ve led the world before with votes for women. And again by saying no to nuclear. It wasn’t the popular thing to do. There were consequences. But it was right. Let’s do it again – and let’s close our doors to the oil and gas industry. It’s bold, it’s brave. It’s very New Zealand.
Please share this video. Let’s make sure everyone understands that once we turned back the nuclear ships. Now it’s time to turn back the oil ships.
s. Please sign the petition calling on Jacinda Ardern to reject oil ex… in the blue whale habitat off Taranaki – where The Beast is due to start seismic blasting. This will be hugely harmful for the whales – like a nail gun going off in your kitchen every 10 seconds! The more noise we can make about this, the less likely it is that the Government will rubber-stamp it.
Ps. A big thank you to Split Enz who lent their track to this video. Recognise it? Watch it here.
