“We can break the mountains apart; we can drain the rivers and flood the valleys. We can turn the most luxuriant forests into throw-away paper products. We can tear apart the great grass cover of the western plains and pour toxic chemicals into the soil and pesticides onto the fields until the soil is dead and blows away in the wind. We can pollute the air with acids, the rivers with sewage, the seas with oil – all this in a kind of intoxication with our power for devastation at an order of magnitude beyond all reckoning.” THOMAS BERRY

ALOHA FROM ALOHA LAND 🙂 I’m not sure what the politically correct names for the ‘Big Island’ and ‘Hawai’i’ are any more…they change from day to day depending on who I talk to. But I am here…in what were known as the Sandwich Islands in the days of Mark Twain.

This broadcast of OTB radio is an interview with Kathleen Carr, a brilliant
photographer who spent several years living at two foundational ‘intentional’ or ‘esoteric spiritual’ communities in the 1970’s, Findhorn in northern Scotland and the Esalen Institute in Big Sur California. Kathy was nice enough to host me for a few weeks in Captain Cook. I did this ‘ultimate sea life 2’ painting for her, and spent a lot of time at the historical Painted Church, where I fell in love with the beautiful and powerful enchanting energy there. I played my flute in the church every day, and hung out with who has to be the most beautiful guardian angel I’ve ever actually seen! I call him/her ‘Ga Anja’ which is what the character Nell in the Jody Foster movie if the same name called Liam Neeson, her social worker cum care-taker.

Kathy has some interesting insights to share, but what I’d like to thank her for most of all, above and beyond having me for a few productive weeks, is turning me on to the writings and wisdom of Thomas Berry. Check out her web-site to see her awesome photos, and the trailer to her ‘whale journey’ film.
THE PAINTING I DID FOR KATHLEEN FOR HAVING ME
I have spent time at both Findhorn and Esalen, but just as a visitor or workshop participant. I visited Findhorn in 1998 and found it to be a very powerful place, although I didn’t really fit in with the quasi-‘cult-‘ like mentality I perceived. The beach there had some of the nicest paintable rocks I’ve ever seen. I visited Esalen in 1978 and again in 1979, to do workshops with Dr. John C. Lilly, and with Fritjof Capra. A lot of leading-edge innovators in the psychology of being here now have come through these places. In terms of the spirit of what the places are basically all about, I personally are far more attuned to the spirit of Findhorn and their devotion to and awareness of the plant kingdom.
THE LEGENDARY DOUGLAS ‘DOLPHINUS’ WEBSTER WITH HIS REWORKED PAINTING ‘ENCKE’ 🙂
I was lucky to get to hang out with Douglas for a bit, I have to extend astronomical thanks to him for his on-going support of my work through hosting and managing my web-site. THANKS HEAPS MY BROTHER 🙂
