ON THE BRINK OF SILENCE
Welcome back to the Brink. I am never far from it, and I’m thankful for always being in view of the edges of perception and reality. This is not the in-depth email I would like to be sending, but at least I am able to get it posted in the appropriate time slot. It’s been over a month since my last posting, and I apologize to anyone who has missed me! I’ve missed you, too 🙂 It’s been that extreme holidaziac time of year and even with Christmas and New Year’s behind us, another bout has crept in this week with Waitangi Day in New Zealand. Easter won’t be too far behind. Even though Argentina supposedly has the most public holidays of any country, 19, it seems like there’s holidays of some kind at least every other week down under, on either side of the pond.
So much to share but I have to keep this short. I’ve recorded six new OTB shows in the past couple months, each of which deserves its own blog post and email. I am working on this, but for now here are soundcloud links to those shows.
CLYDE GRAF – BIOCIDAL AOTEAROA (1080)
FIONA MCQUEEN – BIOCIDAL AOTEAROA (1080)
STAN WOLFGRAM – RAROTONGA
“DON’T LOOK BACK…YOU’RE NOT GOING THAT WAY”
ROB ALLISTON – IN MEMORY OF A SPIRITUAL BROTHER
NEW ZEALAND/AOTEAROA 2019: NOT QUITE 100%
This week’s show was recorded at the Rainbow Valley community near Takaka, in the Golden Bay region of the south island of New Zealand. It’s such a wonderful place that it deserves a show dedicated to it and the lovely people there, but the most salient quality of this enchanted place is the almost total absence of anthropogenic noise. It really struck me after about a day, when I realized that I had been guided to a real-life ‘low noise reserve’, something that I’ve been working on and trying to get establishded on my beloved Aotea, or Great Barrier Island, a place of profound and relatively undisrupted natural beauty but…to MY ear…huge issues with noise. RBV community is in general about 1000 times quieter than the more populated areas of Aotea. That’s probably around 30 -40 dB less anthropogenic acoustic toxicity! I’m working on a blog post on all this, as it’s such a central issue to much of my work, in particular with the whales and dolphins.
But please check out the work of two acoustic researchers/activists whose work I have just become acquainted with. M
arc Anderson has declined to do a long-distance interview, although I may catch up with him in Sydney; Gordon Hempton I have not yet been able to get in touch with.
They are both a step ahead of me in terms of ‘low noise reserves’ and bio-acoustic awareness education…LONG LIVE SILENCE!
