From Niki at Aotearoa Water Action:
Yesterday a friend sent me this Trade Me listing:
‘Omihi Creek’ – Water Bottling Opportunity
Omihi Creek is in Hurunui, Canterbury. The company added water bottling to the conditions of their water permit back in 2009. They have never bottled water but the sale of the land could see 534,667 m3 of water per year used for water bottling. Clearly, the property is being sold as a water bottling opportunity.
We don’t think it’s ok in a polluted and fully allocated catchment, and in a Climate Crisis, to put our cleanest water into plastic bottles and transport it across the globe.
Aotearoa Water Action has filed in the the Court of Appeal.
We are challenging the way applications to bottle water are being assessed under ECan’s Land and Water Regional Plan. We believe all the effects of the way water is used must be considered when these applications are processed, including the effects of water bottling on te mauri o te wai and kaitiakitanga and the effects of plastic bottles on the environment.
We have 17 days left to raise $40,000. It’s a lot but we think our water is worth it.
