James Reynolds Bath (born August 18, 1936) is a Texas businessman who has business interests in aircraft sales and leasing and real estate. He is best known for his business relationships with Saudi businessmen Salem bin Laden and Khalid bin Mahfouz.
Bath was born in 1936 in Natchitoches, Louisiana. In 1965, he moved to Houston, where he became an aircraft broker.
In 1975, Bath met Salem bin Laden when bin Laden was interested in purchasing a used aircraft. Salem bin Laden was the son of Mohammed bin Laden, founder of the Saudi Binladin Group, one of the largest construction companies in the world. Through this acquaintance, Bath eventually became bin Laden’s business representative in the United States, representing him in a number of business deals, including real estate, aircraft services, and banking. Through bin Laden, Bath also met Khalid bin Mahfouz, the son of Salem Bin Mahfouz, founder of National Commercial Bank, now the largest bank in Saudi Arabia, and for a time represented him as well.
Bath was also an acquaintance of former president George W. Bush, whom he met when both men were serving in the Texas Air National Guard in the early 1970s. After Bush started his first business, Arbusto Energy, Bath invested $50,000 in the firm. A former business partner of Bath, Charles White, who was involved in a number of suits against Bath, claimed in a 2003 interview with Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that the investment in fact came from bin Mahfouz and bin Laden, and amounted to over a million dollars. Both Bush and Bath have denied this, and according to journalist Craig Unger, who examined the relationship between the Bushes and Saudi financiers in his 2004 book House of Bush, House of Saud, there is no evidence to support it.

Carlyle has been profiled in two notable documentaries: Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 and William Karel’s The World According to Bush.
In Fahrenheit 9/11, Moore makes nine allegations concerning the Carlyle Group.[89] Moore focused on Carlyle’s connections with George H. W. Bush and his Secretary of State James Baker, both of whom had at times served as advisers to the firm. The movie quotes author Dan Briody, who claimed that the Carlyle Group “gained” from the September 11 attacks because it owned military contractor United Defense. A Carlyle spokesman noted in 2003 that its 7% interest in defense industries was far less than several other private equity firms. In The World According to Bush, William Karel interviewed Frank Carlucci to discuss the presence of Shafiq bin Laden, Osama bin Laden’s estranged brother, at Carlyle’s annual investor conference while the September 11 attacks were occurring.

The World According to Bush (French: Le Monde Selon Bush) is a 2004 French documentary, co-written and directed by William Karel based on the book by Éric Laurent, about the presidency of George W. Bush and the history of the Bush family, including his grandfather Prescott Bush, who was on the board of German-owned companies during the Nazi period. The film examines and interviews Bush supporters, including the Christian right, neo-conservatives, and businesspeople, as well as Bush critics and shows televised statements made by Bush and his supporters, including Jerry Falwell. It was nominated for the Best Documentary Award at the European Film Awards and was to have been an Official Selection for the 2004 Cannes Film Festival but was rejected following the selection of Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11. On January 20, 1993, following the first inauguration of his successor Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush and his wife Barbara Bush built a retirement house in the community of West Oaks, Houston. He established a presidential office within the Park Laureate Building on Memorial Drive in Houston. He declined to serve on corporate boards, but delivered numerous paid speeches and served as an adviser to The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm.
